The Smithsonian benefits from the work of thousands of passionate volunteers who support the organization on-site in our museums, zoo, and other facilities.

Today, digital technology makes it possible for people who believe in the Smithsonian mission to make significant contributions online. "Digital Volunteers" can now take on important assignments to expand access to the Smithsonian's massive collections, and can participate in a variety of research programs. Some roles require special knowledge or skill, but many do not.

Selected opportunities are described below.

Smithsonian Transcription Center

Launched in July 2013, the Smithsonian Transcription Center seeks to engage the public in making our collections more accessible. Citizen scholars are invited to transcribe historic documents including diaries and working papers of prominent Americans and records associated with the Smithsonian's vast scientific collections. Transcription makes these important materials more accessible to researchers around the world, as well as the general public.

To date, more than ten thousand citizen scholars have come to the Transcription Center and engaged with the wide array of documents posted there by Smithsonian archivists and curators—from field notebooks surveying snakes and reptiles in South Dakota in 1894 to the diaries of Leo Baekeland, the American chemist and founder of the modern plastics industry.

Smithsonian Wikipedian Volunteer Program

The Smithsonian seeks digital volunteers to assist in contributing content to Wikipedia related to our collections and areas of expertise. Improving the quality and quantity of reliable information on Wikipedia, as well as usage of Smithsonian resources on the site, helps meet our mission, the "increase and diffusion of knowledge." We seek experienced and motivated Wikipedia editors who are technically proficient in both the software and the norms of the Wikimedia community. Anyone can contribute. Improve access to history by transcribing, reviewing, and tagging Library of Congress documents.

The Library of Congress launched By the People (crowd.loc.gov) in the autumn of 2018. The application invites you to transcribe, review, and tag digitized images of manuscripts and typed materials from the Library’s collections.  All transcriptions are made and reviewed by volunteers before they are returned to loc.gov, the Library's website. These transcriptions will improve search, readability, and access to handwritten and typed documents for those who are not fully sighted or cannot read the handwriting of the original documents. Bringing sight to blind and low-vision people

Be My Eyes is a free mobile app with one main goal: to make the world more accessible for blind and low-vision people. The app connects blind and low-vision individuals with sighted volunteers and companies from all over the world through a live video call.

Since we launched in January 2015, more than 2,000,000 volunteers have signed up to assist blind and low-vision users. Be My Eyes users can request assistance in over 180 languages making the app the biggest online community for blind and low-vision people as well as one of the largest micro-volunteering platforms in the world! Every day, volunteers sign onto Be My Eyes to lend their sight to blind and low-vision individuals to tackle challenges and solve problems together.

The Be My Eyes story started in Denmark in 2012 with Hans Jørgen Wiberg, a Danish furniture craftsman, who is visually impaired himself. Through his work at ‘The Danish Association of the Blind’, he recognized that blind or low-vision people often needed a little assistance to solve everyday tasks. However, it wasn’t until a blind friend told him that he used video calls to connect with family and friends, who could help him with these tasks, that Hans Jørgen got the idea for Be My Eyes. He believed that the technology of video calls could be used to visually assist blind or low-vision individuals, without them having to rely on friends and family, but using a network of volunteers.

When disaster strikes, Digital Volunteers assist the Social Engagement team by:

Monitoring online conversations for disaster-affected people who may need Red Cross help Sharing important disaster updates and resources through their personal social media accounts Offering a compassionate voice to people who have been impacted

Digital Volunteers sign up to monitor, engage, and report in four-hour shifts. While this work is done remotely, our Digital Volunteers report directly to the National Headquarters Social Engagement team in coordination with their local chapter communicators.

This role is a good fit for you if: Your online presence reflects our Fundamental Principles Your friends would describe you as empathetic, patient and unflappable You have good judgment You are willing to use your personal social presence to act as an official volunteer of the American Red Cross. You are capable of handling many details at once Technology Requirements

Due to the time commitment and technical tools involved in this role, there are a few requirements that you must meet before you can get trained to be a Digital Volunteer.

You must have: An active Twitter and/or Facebook account An active and regularly checked email account Intermediate to advanced proficiency in using social media sites Some familiarity with social media monitoring programs and online group collaboration tools (examples: Tweetdeck, Hootsuite, online forums) The ability to use a computer for at least four (4) continuous hours, including breaks Ready to Join? It’s easy! Register as an American Red Cross volunteer. You can sign up online by visiting RedCross.org/Volunteer/. Pick your Opportunity! During intake, you will have the opportunity to search for a position or complete the interactive role finder to find other opportunities you may find to be a good fit. Take training. Once you are approved into a volunteer position, you will have access to EDGE to take this and additional training (which will vary according to regional needs and current skillset). Take the Social Basics course found in the EDGE learning hub.

This is an activity to familiarize yourself with Community Connect and to learn how to search for and "respond" to volunteer opportunities. First, you should explore the website and practice searching for opportunities. This online system is a valuable resource and tool made available for your success.  Whether you are seeking opportunities as an individual or part of a group, using this platform will open doors for networking and the potential for earning service awards at Miami University Regionals.
